Watching a Master Preacher at Work

Dr. Harry S. Wright, Sr. has been called "a living legend of preaching"—and the title fits. The man's a master at his craft. As you read this week's sermon—"He Can Do It"—notice some of the highlights of Dr. Wright's approach to preaching:

  • One clear big idea—Don't fret because God will take care of judging the wicked. He draws in aspects of the entire psalm, but he stays focused on that one idea.
  • A clear, memorable outline with two simple points: (1) Don't fret over evildoers; (2) God will take care of you.
  • Quiet authority. Dr. Wright doesn't have to shout, or pressure, or put on a show. His confidence rests in the Lord and his Word.
  • Illustrations organic to the text. In other words, they are simple and they fit the text.
  • A nonlinear approach to exposition. It's like Dr. Wright puts one beautiful idea in the middle of a circle and then he takes us on a stroll around the circle helping us look at that theme from different angles and perspectives.

Don't let Dr. Wright's homespun ease fool you. This man has spent his life honing the craft of preaching—and it shows.
