Mother Refuses Life Saving Treatments

A young mother in Los Angeles made the ultimate sacrifice for her newborn: she refused lifesaving treatment for her bone cancer. Accepting treatment meant that she would have had to end her baby's life. Ashley Bridges was diagnosed when she was 10 weeks pregnant. Doctors said she would have to terminate the pregnancy in order to begin chemotherapy immediately. Bridges says, "There's no way I could kill a healthy baby because I'm sick."

Delaying treatment until the baby's (early as possible) delivery meant that the disease spread. Doctors are currently only giving her a year to live. She said, "I felt like I tried so hard to keep Paisley safe and do the minimum [treatment] to keep her healthy. The thought that I'm not going to see her grow up is really hard." Bridges concludes, "Maybe I'm not supposed to be here and she is."

Possible Preaching Angle:

In difficult dilemmas like this, it's hard to say sometimes what the right choice is. But this mother is confident that she made it, in a beautiful image of self-sacrifice.
