Collision on Campus: Tolerance vs. Free Speech
"From Missouri to Yale to Wesleyan to the University of California, public and private schools have become embroiled in controversies that have some faculty concerned about the stifling of free speech, and many students upset that their appeals to rid campuses of intolerance and racial insensitivity are being given short shrift." So begins a recent Wall Street Journal article. Protests have led to the ouster of the president at the University of Missouri and the dean of students from California's McKenna College. In an interview on NPR, author Roxanne Gay was asked if students are being coddled. Ms. Gay gave an interesting response, "I mean, what's wrong with being coddled once in a while? This notion that we should just be thrown to the lions and make do is absurd. There is very little to be gained from suffering."
Possible Preaching Angle:
No matter where you stand on the protests and the protestors, is there really something to be gained from coddling and nothing to be gained from suffering? That's a worldview that will lead to some profound disappointment.
