Striving for Orange

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic image, largely due to its bright orange paint job that never seems to rust or tarnish. The reason the Bridge can maintain its look amidst the salt water air, the constant usage, and the California sun, is because of Chad Allan and his team of painters. The job of upkeep on the Bridge is a never-ending battle filled with a variety of obstacles one might not consider.

"In the course of their duties, the painters can find themselves in precarious positions. They're often tied off with self-retracting life-lines or 'yo-yos,' so being humiliated is about the worst that can happen if they fall. Still, tight-roping at a bone-smashing distance above the brine can be unsettling." All of the people involved with the job tell stories of the rewarding feeling they get from working on the Bridge, even if it takes a physical and mental toll.
