The 24-year-old Retiree

Rookie player Chris Borland finished his first year playing football in the NFL. He was considered one of the best defensive rookies in the league and the future seemed bright for him. Even though his future as an NFL pro looked good, Borland decided to retire from football. He cited a few past injuries combined with the ongoing research into the long-term effects of concussions on football players, as well as a desire to pursue other passions he has—including his family and quality of life. "I think I'd have to take on some risks that, as a person, I don't want to take on."

Possible Preaching Angle:

Our culture has trouble making sense of the choice to trade fame and money for "intangibles," like, you know, health, happiness, and personal well-being. Where are our priorities? What are the things we value? Are we willing to trade what we think we want for the things that give us life?
