Trust No One

According to a story in The Washington Post, Millennials don't trust you or anyone else for that matter. According to the latest polling out of Harvard University's Institute of Politics, they really don't trust anyone—not government, not the Supreme Court, and definitely not the media. They do trust two types of people: the military and scientists. According to the story to dismiss this fact is to miss a more important fact—"Society-wide trust in institutions is at or near record lows." The reason for this distrust: "the safety net is gone." That is the belief that we were safe and secure before 9/11 is gone.

The story ends with this quote: "Interactions with people with whom they disagree and entities such as Congress or the news media dwindle. Suspicion rises. Distrust becomes pervasive." Where does religion rank? Not too shabby. 45 percent of Millennials trust religion (25 percent "trust a great deal" and 20 percent "trust quite a lot"—fourth highest in the rankings).

Possible Preaching Angle:

The realization that religion/church is the fourth most trusted institution is key for the body of Christ. While Millennials and society at large may be skeptical of other institutions, the church has a key role to play in the distrust of these Millennials and provide a safe place to learn about Jesus Christ.
