The Family Deficit

"Along with the budget deficit, we have a family deficit," writes economic expert and columnist Robert J. Samuelson in The Washington Post. "It explains some stubborn poverty and our frustrations in combating it. We've learned that what good families provide cannot easily be gotten elsewhere. For the nation, this is the deficit that matters most."

Possible Preaching Angle:

Strong words, countering the myth that for social strength and the common good, the persistence of healthy families is essential. While the value of family should never be seen merely as the net result of its economic or social impact, such contributions to the health of communities can't be overlooked. Wherever you are in life—single or married, with or without dependents, this much can be said. As each of us contribute to the family and community systems that we're part of, we can feel good that we're giving back not just to those in our immediate vicinity, but to our entire culture.
