Communication Fail: The FBI's Guide to Internet Slang

The Washington Post ran an article with this long and funny title: "The FBI maintains an 83-page glossary of Internet slang. And it is hilariously, frighteningly out of touch." In a taxpayer-funded study, the FBI has compiled a glossary of Internet slang—at least what they think are the slang phrases to know. FBI operatives need to understand Internet slang because, increasingly, that's where crime goes down these days.

But here are some of the head-scratching terms the FBI considers "can't-miss Internet slang": BOGSAT ("bunch of guys sitting around talking"), GIWIST ("gee, I wish I said that"), HCDAJFU ("he could do a job for us"), SOMSW ("someone over my shoulder watching"), and YKWRGMG ("you know what really grinds my gears"?).

Possible Preaching Angle:

It's a good lesson on the hard work and potential perils of trying to communicate—across cultures, generations, worldviews, genders, and so forth. It's easy to think we understand what someone is saying, but alas, we might be HOOT ("hopelessly out of touch").
