Compassionately Intersecting the Immigration Crisis
The U.S./Mexico border is currently witnessing a major humanitarian crisis as well over 60,000 unaccompanied immigrant children are arriving at the border from Central American countries, many of them fleeing violence and gang crime in their homes, and vulnerable to sex trafficking, violence, and neglect.
In the midst of this national dilemma, misinformation about the children abounds, as do opinions about how Christians can and should show compassion to them. Have you ever wondered about how to live out Scripture's command to "love the stranger"? We have an opportunity right now. As Evangelical Immigration Table Field Director Matt Soerens writes in an article on CT: "local churches and faith-based organizations have been quietly responding to the crisis with Christ-like compassion."
What can we do? Soerens suggests five things: Give, Address root causes (support or volunteer for organizations bringing change in Latin America, Disciple (learning about the Bible's rich theology for loving strangers), Advocate (including writing your political representatives), and Pray. Even if the border feels far away, it's a reminder that we live in a world full of needs, but that every one of us can make a difference through the love of Christ.
