"Drumline": Resisting Temptation

The movie Drumline explores the maturation of a talented percussionist from Harlem who receives a full-ride scholarship to Atlanta A&T University to play in the marching band. Early on Devon Miles (played by Nick Cannon) discovers that making the transition from hip-hop street drumming to the drumline of a university's celebrated marching band is more challenging than he expected.

Devon consistently deviates from the protocol outlined by Dr. Lee, the band director. He fails to read the band rulebook; he provokes a fight on the field at halftime; and he violates the philosophy of band unity by showing off. Dr. Lee has no choice but to remove Devon from the band.

Devon approaches Mr. Wade, the band director of Morris Brown, the cross-town rival school, in hopes of being recruited by him. They meet at Morris Brown University's stadium to discuss the particulars of Devon transferring to Morris' program. Mr. Wade, with shifty eyes, tells Devon that he's been looking out for him. He's arranged for financial aid and a summer job if he chooses to transfer to Morris Brown. Then Wade whispers that he will throw in another perk. He offers to let Devon sit in the luxury box at the upcoming BET Southern Classic Marching Band Competition.

Mr. Wade asks Devon to share some inside information about what Dr. Lee and the Atlanta A&T marching band are planning for the BET Classic. Devon pleads ignorant, but Wade persists.

(Warning: Because of a few crude words prior to this point, if tape is shown, begin here.)

Wade continues to press Devon for information, but Devon insists, "I don't know."

Turning to his assistant, Wade says sarcastically, "There he goes again. He doesn't know."

"At least a play list," Wade's assistant suggests.

"No, I don't have any idea," Devon says.

Wade says, "Lookie here, son. I'm talking about throwing a lot of financial aid your way next year. You can give me something. Meet me halfway on this thing. You don't want to pass up a good thing like this." He laughs and gives his colleague a high-five.

Devon says, "Look man, I don't know what Dr. Lee's got planned, but whatever it is, I hope he wipe you all up with it."

Devon walks away, leaving Wade and his assistant speechless.

Elapsed time: Measured from the beginning of the opening credit, this scene begins at 01:16:44 and lasts approximately 30 seconds.
