Marriages Need Common Ground

"We were shocked to learn that 55 percent of all affairs begin at the office. The fact is, sharing goals pulls people together. Men and women grow closer through their work, and suddenly they find they have more in common than their jobs.

Why can't this same powerful force—working together toward a common goal—pull our Christian marriages together? Let's face it: Today we need all the common ground we can find.

Like most couples today, Karen and I spend the longest portion of the day—our best hours—miles apart. Even though we call each other, our workday interests and conversations are radically different. My mind is mostly on magazine deadlines, while Karen thinks about graduate classes and kids.

Dennis Rainey warns, 'Every marriage, given its own course, will naturally drift toward isolation, two people separate from one another.' Karen and I want to stop that natural drift toward isolation. Whenever we minister together, we build into our week precious hours where we focus on exactly the same thing at the same time. That's a powerful practice, and it builds marriages."
