Getting the Signals Crossed

We remarked to our church organist and pianist that we were amazed how they were able to communicate to each other when a change in the service required an extra stanza or another song to fit a time period.

The organist confided that it wasn't always that simple. One Sunday morning during the Christmas season, she looked toward the pianist, pointed to her watch, then started playing "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks." The pianist, however, misinterpreted the signal and started to play "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."
