I am not sure how this sermon applies to the multitude of Christians who have suffered persecution at the hands of their enemies (and still are in some parts of the world) or have died of diseases like cancer. With the exception of one possible qualifying statement, the message of the sermon seems to be nothing bad will happen to believers because God offers perfect protection to those who trust in him. Every one of the apostles died a martyr's death except one. Commenting on verse three, the author says, "The deadly pestilence refers to diseases, plagues, and epidemics that touch everyone in their path. But God will deliver you from enemies and epidemics." This simply cannot be stated without qualification. Hebrews 11 tells us of Old Testament saints who were "stoned," "sawed in two," and "died by the sword." And there are heralded as men of faith.
