Mel Gibson Compelled to Believe in Jesus

On a special airing of Primetime Live, ABC's investigative news program, Diane Sawyer sat down with Mel Gibson to grill him about his movie, The Passion. Hot topics included the charge of anti-semitism, historical innacuracy, and an uncritical presentation of the life and death of Jesus Christ.

While these topics received a good bit of airtime, the most poignant portions of the interview were when the conversation turned personal. In certain moments, Gibson became vulnerable, exposed, and expressed how deeply the story of Christ had transformed him. He openly offered that he was not presenting an unbiased perspective on the final hours of Christ's life. Rather, he directed this film as one who believed, one whose life had been radically altered by the life and message of Jesus.

At one point, Gibson said, "I have to believe."

"You have to believe?" asked a confused Diane Sawyer.

"I have to…"

"Why?"

Gibson's responded with an intense, deadpan reply. "So I can hope. So I can live."
