Introduction:

Illustration: There's an old Jewish story: A Rabbi was sitting next to an atheist on an airplane.Exodus 20:12 – honor your father and mother.Quote from Lyle Schaller, a church consultant and author.Eugene Peterson said, "Our land lies east of Eden, and in this land Self is sovereign."Honor and respect for authorityEphesians 6:1-4We need to strive to be worthy of honor and raise children who respect authority and show honor when and where it is appropriate.Illustration: Dog with muddy paws.John Rosemond said, "Parenting is not an intellectual endeavor. It does not emanate from the head. If it did, the smartest people would be the best parents. Good parenting is a matter of how rooted you are in the steady soil of common sense. The heart and the gut are what make a good parent, not the head."Children learn much by watching usHow we honor our parents, how we show respect or disrespect for authority in our lives.Honoring one's parents will depend upon the age of child. For older children part of honoring one's parents is obeying even when you don't have to.For adult children, showing respect is the key.How a child honors an abusive parentThe honor may have to be reduced to honor for the "office" of parent rather than for the person in the "office."Showing honor should never require distorting the truth. Our past, no matter how bad it was, does not have to ruin our future.

Conclusion:

This commandment challenges us to consider the needs of such people as our parents and our children as being more important that our wants.
