Text:
2 Peter 1:12-21
Topic:
How to keep false teachers in perspective.
Introduction
We been talking about how Jesus is the key to
transformed living.
In chapter 2 of 2 Peter, Peter talks about false
teachers, although vaguely.
Here is how we can make sure we don't act like false
teachers.
False teachers are not the focus of our ministry.
Illustration: The Jehova Witnesses are not
orthodox.
It could become our mission to put them out of
business.
Instead, we are called to share the gospel, make
disciples, and serve others.
God is taking care of the situation.
God is aware of who the false teachers are (vv. 9-10)
And God will take care of the situation (vv. 2, 12, 13,
17)
Most of the characteristics of false teachers have to do
character, not theology.
Illustration: May has seen pastors, teachers,
and evangelists manage their ministry in a way that leads them into false
teaching.
This is a frightening chapter in this respect: We need
to be careful not to act like false teachers.
False teachers have a number of characteristics.
(1) An exaggerated emphasis on money (v. 3).
(2) A refusal to submit to authority (v. 10).
(3) They don't walk the talk (v. 10).
Verses 10 and 14 suggest this is mostly about sexual
sin.
(4) They are outside the mainstream of Christian
thought and fellowship (v. 15).
Many Christian today have become tired of historical
Christian doctrine.
Conclusion
False teachers are a fact of spiritual life.
We need not focus on them, but we should be aware of
them. |
