Text: Matthew 13:24-43

Topic: How to understand Jesus' parable of the wheat and tares

Introduction:

  • Matthew 13:24-43
Weeds are an inescapable fact of life.
  • Illustration: May uses the story of a wasp sting to illustrate how some people cause pain without provocation or warning.
  • Illustration: May cites two examples of unprovoked "weeds" harassing Christians: an anti-Tony Compolo website and People Magazine's harsh criticism of Bruce Wilkinson's book, The Prayer of Jabez.
Your main responsibility is to be responsible for yourself.
  • Your job is to keep growing as wheat until you bear fruit.
  • Every time a religious group attempts to go into the weed-pulling business, disaster ensues.
  • The more concerned I am with others sin, the less concerned I become with my own sin.

Our true nature eventually becomes evident.

  • True believers will be identified by the fruit (or grain) they produce.
  • The Christian life is not a matter of weeds trying to pretend to be wheat, the Christian life is a matter of weeds being transformed into wheat by Jesus' power.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17

Conclusion:

  • Matthew 13:43
  • Big Idea: God's plan is to turn weeds into wheat.
