Topic: Jesus suffered intensely to pay for our sins.

  Introduction:
  • The fact that Jesus suffered is indisputable; it's a historical fact.
    • Others scorn the fact that Jesus suffered, but Christians embrace this truth.

Did Jesus really suffer?
  • Jesus suffered at his trial; he was mocked and beaten.
  • Jesus suffered at his scourging (Matthew 27:26).
    • An article in the Journal of the Medical American Association entitled "On the Physical Death of Jesus" gives gruesome details of scourging.
  • Jesus suffered terribly, agonizingly on the cross.
    • Crucifixion was designed to keep the person conscious and suffering. The prospect of death would have been an "exquisite release. But the person couldn't die."
Why did Jesus have to suffer?
  • The key word is payment.
  • 1 John 4:10.
  • It wasn't enough to just die; Jesus had to satisfy the demands of God's wrath.
  • Apart from Christ, God hates our sin with an incomprehensible, burning hatred.
  • That's the gospel: Jesus suffered to pay for our sins, to satisfy God's wrath.
  Conclusion:
  • Someone had to suffer and pay for our sins. It was Jesus.
  • Therefore, I should admit my sin, turn from my sin, believe in Jesus, and receive the gift he offers.
