Text: Genesis 3:1—24

Topic: Why sin must not be ignored

Introduction:
Illustration: Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) comments on the naturalness of sin and how we must not feel guilty for being human.
  • Understanding sin is important in the same way as understanding speed limits and brakes is to driving a car.
  • Illustration: McLaren provides metaphors to frame our understanding of sin.
We learn about how sin works from the Bible.
  • There are four main biblical words for sin.
We become aware of sin from personal experience.
Through our conscience
  • Through law
  • Through our experience with God's glory and grandeur
  • Isaiah 6:1—6
  • Luke 5:4—7, 8—9
  • Romans 3:23
We must not trivialize sin because it leads to death.
  • Romans 7:15—25
  • James 1:14—15
  • Sin is genocidal, planetary terrorism, and if it runs rampant it destroys goodness and beauty and hope and freedom and life itself

Conclusion:

  • By understanding sin we want to gain a greater understanding of God's work of transforming this world through Jesus Christ.
