According to the Consumer Reports National Research Center, one out of every five gift-card recipients never used their cards last year, representing about $972 million in unredeemed cards.

The top reasons for not using gift cards include:

Haven't had time: 50 percent
Haven't found anything I wanted: 37 percent
Lost the card: 14 percent
Card expired: 12 percent
