Pixar's Accountants Take Filmmaking Classes

To date (August 2015), Pixar Animation Studio, or Pixar for short, has produced 15 well-received films, including the Toy Story movies, Brave, Finding Nemo, and Inside Out. How do they manage to churn out such high-quality productions? One reason is that they invest in their employees by creating a climate where they can grow in using and expanding their gifts. Pixar's headquarters houses Pixar University, where any employee can, for example, take courses in filmmaking and other skills.

The former head of Pixar University Randy Nelson told a reporter, "Why are we teaching filmmaking to accountants?" He answered his own question by saying, "If you treat accountants like accountants, they're going to act like accountants." In other words, Pixar expects its employees to do their jobs, but Pixar leaders also encourage their employees to grow and learn and be equipped to develop and employ all of their gifts and abilities.
