Spiritual Classics: Selected Readings for Individuals and Groups on the Twelve Spiritual Disciplines
Edited by Richard J. Foster and Emilie Griffin
HarperSanFrancisco  (2000); 368 pages

About the Book

The content of this book is intended to provide "a year's worth of weekly readings keyed to twelve important spiritual disciplines for the Christian life." Each reading includes a brief biographical sketch of the author, a selection of his or her writing, and a related passage of Scripture. These are followed by group discussion questions, recommendations for exercises, a short bibliography for further reading, and a brief reflection by Richard Foster.

The selections reflect Renovaré's commitment to inter-denominational and inter-generational conversation, highlighting selections from figures as diverse as Augustine and Pheobe Palmer, Thomas à Kempis and G. K. Chesterton, and John Wesley and Martin Luther King, Jr.

How It Will Help

This book provides an accessible introduction to writers across traditions and presents a practical way of engaging writers from other denominations and time periods. The resources here will provide the preacher with deeper and broader knowledge of spiritual formation in the Christian tradition.
