Conformed to His Image: Biblical and Practical Approaches to Spiritual Formation
by Kenneth Boa
Zondervan (2001); 465 pages
About the Book
Conformed to His Image celebrates the ways in which the diversity of human personalities affects spiritual formation. Boa identifies twelve types of spirituality, or twelve facets on the gem of faith; that is, there are (at least) twelve ways people conceive of their relationship with God. Each facet represents a different personality type and the style of formation each is most attracted to. Thus, Boa acknowledges that spiritual formation is not a cookie-cutter process. Instead, the perceived goals of spiritual formation differ from one personality type to the next.
How It Will Help
This book will be very useful for the preacher sensitive to his or her audience. For example, the highly relational pastor may articulate the goals and means of spiritual formation in a way that sounds unintelligible or irrelevant to the listener more concerned with bringing his private life into order. The book has two helpful appendices as well. The first identifies and catalogues the different concerns and interests people of different personality types will have in spiritual formation. The second appendix provides a thorough introduction to classic literature on the subject of spiritual formation.
