The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives
by Dallas Willard
Harper and Row (1988); 245 pages
About the Book
This is Willard's classic work on the spiritual disciplines. It is less theoretical than Renovation of the Heart and more theoretical than Foster's Celebration of Discipline. Willard spends the first half of the book building a biblical vision of the spiritual life and introducing the reader to the role the disciplines have played in meeting that goal throughout Christian history. He then describes the practice and purpose of disciplines for the Christian life.
How It Will Help
Particularly in Chapter 7 (see below), Willard mines the New Testament for instruction in spiritual formation. The preacher could readily adapt one of these passages (such as Romans 6:1718) as a sermon text. The book offers some practical application, though not as much as Foster's Celebration of Discipline.
