Text: Proverbs 4:23

Topic: What are damaging myths

Introduction:

    • Not all beliefs are as inconsequential as belief in the Tooth Fairy.

Our beliefs have fundamental, profound impact on our lives.

    • Sincere beliefs can also be sincerely wrong.

Illustration: Warren tells the story of mistaking another vehicle for his wife's van, a mistaken belief that cost him.

    • We choose what we believe.
    • Life and behavior, consciously or unconsciously, is shaped by beliefs.

False beliefs are often damaging.

    • The world teaches many false beliefs.

Illustration: Sitting sick in bed for a day, Warren makes a list of statements presented as truth by television talk shows, revealing the corrupted set of truths readily accepted by popular culture.

    • False beliefs cause emotional problems and unhappiness.

Illustration: Warren quotes psychologist Chris Thurman who contends that without the road map of truth, people become lost in emotional problems.

Truth is the key to overcoming the myths that make us miserable.

    • The only source of absolute truth is God.

Illustration: The second best selling book of all time was swallowed as truth by an entire generation, only to have the author, years later, admit he was wrong. Warren shares how accepting truth apart from God adversely affected 73 million Americans.

    • Building life on God's truth builds emotional health and stability.

Illustration: Warren compares living on the shaky ground of false beliefs to the unstable ground of California.

    • Let the truth of God transform you.

1.Commit to seeking the truth.

2.Commit to living the truth.

3.Commit to believing the truth.
